Mamas Hearts United was inspired by the goodness of Katherine H. Smith. The longtime Southern California resident has served on the Anaheim Union High School District Board of Trustees since 1996. She’s an advocate for reducing crime in the community and is responsible for many positive classroom innovations including a daily Moment of Silence and Inspirational Quote, in-room postings of The Golden Rule, and the implementation of Professional Attire for teachers and Academic Attire for students. Katherine also started the Character Counts program, championed Career Technical Education (CTE), worked to place cardiac defibrillators in all schools throughout the district, and founded Grasp (Group Resolving Anti-Social Problems)—a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding and implementing solutions to gang-related issues. Now, she is actively advocating for the introduction of NARCON in public schools to reverse opiate overdose.
